Surgical
reversal of a prior tubal sterilization is a highly successful
procedure which is appropriate for many couples desiring another child
after a female sterilization procedure. In-vitro fertilization
remains an alternative option for these couples and the decision regarding
which procedure best suits their situation must be individualized.
Prior to considering
microsurgical repair of the fallopian tubes, an
assessment of the remaining tubal lengths must be made. The
reversal procedure is most successful when at least 5cm of
fallopian tube length will be present at the conclusion of the
attachment procedure. To obtain this information prior to performing
surgery, a specialized x-ray termed a hysteroalpingogram is necessary.
In addition, a minor telescopic evaluation of the fallopian tubes
is required to complete the assessment prior to scheduling surgery
to assure that the procedure will have good prospects for success.
If a woman is found to be a good candidate for this procedure, she
can expect a 65-70% success rate following the completion of surgery.
