Tubal sterilization reversal is a highly successful procedure which is appropriate for many couples desiring another child after the female sterilization procedure. This microsurgery uses an operating microscope and the application of a delicate surgical technique in order to rejoin parts of the fallopian tubes. When performed by an experienced surgeon, tubal sterilization reversal allows the tubes to remain open approximately 80% of the time, with pregnancy rates of 50-60%. While this procedure is highly effective, it is more invasive than the in vitro fertilization option. Tubal sterilization reversal requires general anesthesia, takes 2-3 hours to complete, and requires some recovery time.
Prior to considering a microsurgical repair of the fallopian tubes, an assessment of the remaining tubal lengths must be made to assure that the total lengths of the repaired tubes will be at least 5cm. The procedure which accomplishes this is the hysterosalpingogran (HSG). This operation does result in a somewhat increased incidence of tubal pregnancy and therefore anyone who has undergone this operation must be monitored carefully when she begins attempts to conceive. In most centers this operation is performed through an abdominal incision (laparotomy) which requires 4-6 weeks for return to full activities and work. In addition to measuring the length of the fallopian tubes, the operative records from the actual tubal ligation must be reviewed as part of the preliminary work-up. Other preparation that is required prior to tubal sterilization reversal includes:
