For a relatively
small percentage of infertile couples, the only option available for
achieving a successful pregnancy is through the use of an egg donor.
The reasons for use of an egg donor include premature menopause, decreased
egg quantity related to patient's age, surgically absent ovaries,
or to avoid transmission of a genetic illness for which the female
recipient is known to be a carrier. The use of an egg donor requires
several important steps:
1) Evaluation of the
recipient.
2) Selection and screening of the donor.
3) Synchronizing the menstrual cycles of the donor and recipient.
4) Stimulation of the ovaries of the donor.
5) Removal of the donor eggs.
6) Insemination of the eggs in laboratory.
7) Transfer of the embryos to the recipient's prepared uterus.
The success rate for
most donor egg programs is quite high, usually in the 50-70% range
treatment cycle.
